From Copacabana to Cusco: Stephen’s Ride Between Bolivia and Peru

September 5, 2025

After conquering Bolivia’s famous Death Road, Stephen spent some days in La Paz, taking in the sights of the city from above on its vast cable car network and visiting the bustling streets below. He also took a day trip to the Tiwanaku archaeological complex, one of South America’s most significant pre-Columbian sites, where ancient ruins offered a glimpse into a rich and mysterious past.

From La Paz, Stephen rode along the shores of Lake Titicaca before boarding a ferry bound for Copacabana. Unlike the large ferries he was accustomed to in Europe, this one was a small wooden boat just big enough for a handful of passengers and his motorcycle. Feeling uneasy as the boat rocked across the water, Stephen was relieved when he and his bike safely reached land.

In Copacabana, he took time to enjoy the lakeside town; visiting churches, cultural sites, and watching golden sunsets over the vast expanse of Lake Titicaca. It was a moment of peace before the road once again beckoned. Crossing into Peru, Stephen stopped in the town of Juli to sort out the usual essentials of travel: buying a SIM card and exchanging currency. From there, he made his way to Puno, where he spent a couple of days resting and carefully planning the next stretch of his journey.

But adventure rarely goes as planned. Shortly after leaving Puno, Stephen suffered a puncture. Thankfully, a friend he had met earlier in Pucara came to the rescue, helping get his wheel repaired. Not long after setting out again, another puncture struck the same tire. This time, Stephen had to call for help in the nearby town of Ayaviri, where his bike was towed, repaired, and fully serviced.

With his motorcycle once again roadworthy, Stephen pressed onward and finally reached Cusco, the historic heart of the Inca Empire. Now based there, he is preparing for the next stage of his long ride north toward Central America.
