Halfway through his latest adventure, Stephen finds himself reflecting on the road behind him, a path that’s already carried him through over 25 towns and villages across South and Central America. From the bustling capitals to remote lakeside hamlets, every stop has offered a new story, a new face, and a deeper understanding of this diverse continent.
This journey has carried a different rhythm to Stephen’s previous adventure across Europe and Asia. There, he rode through various cities and towering landmarks, often covering long, quiet stretches between destinations. In South and Central America, the experience feels more immediate and personal. Communities here are tightly woven, and traditions are proudly lived out in daily life, from lively street gatherings to the rich blend of indigenous customs and colonial history that shape each town. The hospitality is heartfelt and open, with people eager to share their stories and offer a helping hand, often bridging language barriers with simple kindness.

The sense of community Stephen has witnessed is striking. In many of the small towns and mission projects he’s visited, it’s clear that people lean on one another in ways that feel both familiar and humbling. Orphanages, local schools, and community centres supported by Missio Malta have opened their doors to him, revealing stories of resilience and hope amid economic hardship. Unlike the more reserved hospitality he encountered in parts of Asia, here strangers become friends within minutes, often without a shared language, a smile, a gesture, and the simple bond of human kindness carrying conversations through.
There have been challenges too. Wild, unpredictable weather, demanding gravel roads, and the sheer size of this continent have tested Stephen’s patience and stamina. Yet the reward has been the journey itself, from witnessing wild horses in Uruguay to sharing meals with indigenous communities in Paraguay, every moment has etched itself into memory.

Now, as Stephen approaches the next leg of his adventure, he carries with him not only stories but the unshakable sense that though roads and customs may differ, the heart of a community is universal, and it beats strongest where people gather to lift one another up.
