Temples, Traditions, and a Testimony of Hope in Hampi

February 24, 2025

We join up with Stephen as he begins his day exploring the ancient temples of Hampi, India. He is fascinated by the fact that traditional rituals still take place in these centuries-old temples. The intricate carvings on the temple exteriors leave him in awe, though the effects of time and erosion have started to show.

During a break between temple visits, Stephen stops for lunch and reflects on the vibrant celebrations he witnessed the previous evening, which included traditional dancing, colorful attire, and fireworks. After lunch, he continues to explore, visiting another grand temple and an area that was once a bustling market. He is struck by the contrast between the sheer size of the temple and the meticulous details covering its surfaces, marveling at the incredible time and craftsmanship it must have taken to construct such a masterpiece. As the sun begins to set, Stephen takes a moment to admire the breathtaking view before heading back to his lodgings to prepare for the following day.

The next morning, Stephen meets Father George, who takes him to visit projects funded by the Maltese. Father George explains that his parish consists of nearly 165 families, with many of their children sponsored through Missio Malta. Most of these families live in poor conditions, and Father George shows Stephen a house belonging to a widow with two children. The home had been severely damaged during the winter, rendering it almost uninhabitable. However, thanks to financial support from Maltese benefactors, repairs are now underway, offering the family hope for a better future.

Following the village tour, Father George introduces Stephen to some of the sponsored children. These bright young students are receiving an education and are deeply grateful for the support provided to them and their families. Stephen then visits a facility dedicated to supporting children with disabilities, which operates entirely through donations from the local community. This center serves as a safe haven where children receive therapy, education, and even job training, ensuring they have opportunities for a better life.

Later in the day, Stephen visits the Jesuits near the village, only to find himself walking into a funeral for one of the bishops who had initially agreed to host him. Despite the unexpected somber occasion, he meets Father Paul Aquilina, a Maltese Jesuit who has served since 1951. Now 92 years old, Father Paul continues to dedicate himself to his vocation, overseeing a center where priests and laypeople come to study. Even after 70 years of service, his unwavering commitment to his faith and mission leaves a lasting impression on Stephen.
