From Classrooms to Clean Water: Lahore Mission Projects

February 3, 2025

We continue with Stephen at a construction site, accompanied by Sister Frances and two other sisters. The construction site is an extension of the school and is called Sacred Heart Girls High School. Sister Frances explains that there is a high demand, especially for young girls to be sent to school, as it is common for parents to marry off young girls as young as 9 or 10 years old.

Sister Frances then takes Stephen to a classroom where young students are attending a class and explains that Missio Malta has funded several resources such as desks and chairs. She describes the poor economic background that some of the students come from, as some cannot even afford a pencil. However, whatever the students cannot afford, the Sisters provide, as they see the students as their own children.

Sister Frances then takes Stephen to the garden, where a mathematics lesson is taking place. She explains that due to the shortage of classrooms, they have no other option but to conduct the class outside.

After spending the morning with Sister Frances, Stephen is introduced to Father Gerald, a Maltese missionary who has been doing missionary work in Pakistan since 2010. Father Gerald takes care of the boys’ primary school in Lahore and shares a story of a time when he was struggling with expensive maintenance costs for the water filtration system in the school. Just when he was facing difficulties, he received a message from a friend asking if he had any projects related to water. Grateful to God for the timing of the offer, Father Gerald explains that through this support, he was able to upgrade the water filtration system, which now produces over 1,500 gallons of purified water per day. Due to the lack of clean water resources, locals used to struggle immensely to obtain clean water, but with this system, he can now provide clean water to the community.

The following day, Stephen is taken around Lahore to explore the city. Later, he accompanies Sister Rubina to meet some of the poor families that the Dominican Sisters of Malta assist. Sister Rubina explains the situation of the family they visit—a widow with four children who struggles to pay rent and send her children to school. To help with the bills, her young son works during the night while also attending school during the day. The Dominican Sisters support multiple families facing different struggles, helping them find peace and happiness despite their hardships.

The next day, Stephen visits the Wagah border, a popular location known for its famous border ceremony between India and Pakistan. As the day comes to an end, Stephen heads to the guesthouse to prepare for the journey ahead.
