Hope and Hospitality: Stephen’s Time in Lahore

January 27, 2025

We catch up with Stephen as he rides solo through Pakistan, heading toward Lahore. After a long day of travel, he arrives in the evening at the home of Master Huan, a friend who welcomes him warmly. The family is in the kitchen preparing dinner—freshly cooked fish and chapati. Over a shared meal, Stephen enjoys the hospitality of his hosts and spends the night there, grateful for a comfortable place to rest.

The next day, Stephen continues his journey to Lahore, where he plans to visit a special missionary project, the Sacred Heart School. The school, run by the Maltese Dominican Missionary Sisters, has been providing education to underprivileged children for decades. Upon arrival, Stephen meets Sister Frances, who has been doing missionary work in Pakistan since 1984. Sister Liliana and Sister Michelle offer to take Stephen around Lahore to explore the city.

Their first stop is a religious museum, and then they head to the school itself. Stephen is greeted with a warm and joyous welcome from the students, who present him with a garland and a traditional dance. Sister Frances explains that many of these children come from extremely poor families and that providing them with education and basic necessities has been a significant challenge. She reflects on how far the school has come—from starting with just two small rooms and little to eat, to now operating a well-established institution with bright, hopeful students.

The Sisters proudly show Stephen the school’s science and computer labs, both funded by Missio Malta, which provide critical resources to the students. Sister Frances speaks passionately about the unity and brotherly love fostered within the school, where children help and teach one another—especially those who lack families. She highlights the importance of this education for young girls, many of whom might otherwise face early marriage due to their families’ dire circumstances.

Despite the daily hardships these children face, the Sisters’ love, care, and dedication provide them with opportunities for a brighter future. Stephen leaves the school feeling deeply moved and filled with gratitude. With a renewed sense of purpose, he continues his journey, inspired by the incredible work being done in Lahore.
