Stephen’s Armenian Adventure: Monasteries and Mountains

December 20, 2024

Stephen’s final day in Tbilisi is filled with small but necessary errands to prepare for the next leg of his journey. He drops off some clothes at a tailor for repairs and picks up oil for his motorbike to keep it running smoothly. With everything in order, Stephen sets out toward the border, leaving Georgia behind and heading for Armenia.

The scenery gradually transforms as he rides—urban landscapes and wide roads give way to rolling green fields and quiet rural vistas. Crossing the border into Armenia is seamless, and Stephen reflects on the country’s rich history as the first Christian nation in the world. He’s particularly intrigued by the legend of the Holy Lance, a relic said to be housed in Armenia, which he plans to see during his visit.

Stephen arrives in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, where he settles in for the night. The next day, he embraces his role as a tourist, heading to the Geghard Monastery. This historic site, partially carved into a mountain, is believed to have safeguarded the Holy Lance for over 500 years. After marveling at its history and architecture, Stephen continues on his journey.

As he drives to his next destination, the weather shifts dramatically. Fog rolls in, and temperatures drop, prompting Stephen to pull over and add layers for warmth. Fortunately, the roads remain dry, and he is relieved to avoid the challenges of rain or strong winds.

Reaching his accommodation for the night, Stephen decides to visit the Wings of Tatev, home to the world’s longest cable car ride. The breathtaking journey offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. At the end of the ride lies the Tatev Monastery, a serene and historic site that leaves a lasting impression.

With the day’s adventures behind him, Stephen continues his ride toward the Iranian border, taking in Armenia’s stunning landscapes and reflecting on the incredible journey so far.
