Across the Andes: Stephen’s Journey Through the Heart of Peru

October 13, 2025

After reaching Cusco, Stephen took time to explore one of the most remarkable landmarks of the Inca Empire, the Sacsayhuamán Fortress. Standing before the massive, perfectly interlocked stones, he was left in awe of the engineering mastery of a civilization that thrived centuries ago. The sense of history was incredible, as he imagined the echoes of the ancient empire that once ruled these mountains.

In the days that followed, Stephen boarded a train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to the world-famous Machu Picchu. The train wound its way through lush valleys and misty peaks, offering glimpses of the breathtaking scenery that awaited. After a few days of rest and reflection, Stephen continued his exploration of Peru’s Inca heritage with a visit to the Pisac ruins. Known for their impressive agricultural terraces and intricate stonework, the site once served as a military fortress, religious center, and agricultural hub, a true testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of the Inca civilization.

Stephen’s journey also brought him to Arequipa, where he reunited with two Maltese priests, Father Alex and Father Victor, who have been serving in Peru for many years. The meeting was filled with stories, laughter, and shared reflections on life abroad and the importance of faith and service in new lands.

Over the next few days, Stephen continued northward, passing through towns like Combapata, Checacupe, Kuntrurkanki, and Espinar, each revealing its own charm and character. Once back in Arequipa, he spent several days exploring the “White City,” visiting the Monastery of Santa Catalina and taking in the view of the majestic Misti volcano. Before leaving, Stephen made sure his faithful motorcycle received a much-needed service, an essential part of any long journey.

Further along his travels, Stephen reached Cruz del Cóndor, one of Peru’s most stunning natural lookouts. True to its name, he was greeted by several Andean condors gliding gracefully above him, a powerful and humbling sight. The road through the Colca Valley tested both his endurance and his bike’s limits, as he reached his highest altitude record yet: 4,888 meters above sea level.

Now in Ica, Stephen enjoys a brief pause in his travels, preparing to continue his long road north through Peru, one step closer to his next destination, and another chapter in this grand adventure.
