From Llama Stew to Tight-Knit Towns: A Month on the Road

June 25, 2025

Since our last update, Stephen has made the most of his time on the road, journeying through Argentina, crossing into Chile, and continuing north into Bolivia, each destination offering new discoveries and unexpected friendships.

While still in Argentina, Stephen visited the lively market in Tilcara, where locals filled the town square with colorful souvenirs, handmade crafts, and traditional products. It was a perfect place to take in the rhythm of everyday life, surrounded by the sounds of street musicians and bustling stalls. From there, he tackled the winding climb up to Alto del Morado, reaching a breathtaking 4,170 meters above sea level. The ride may have been demanding, but the view of endless mountain landscapes made it well worth the effort.

In Antonio de Los Cobres, a small high-altitude town, Stephen took the opportunity to try a unique local delicacy: cazuela de llama. The hearty stew, made with llama meat, was the perfect reward after a long, rugged day on the road. His next stop was Cafayate, a charming town known for its vineyards and striking red rock formations. There, Stephen explored the natural amphitheater and drove along the famed Route 68, where the road cuts through towering cliffs and weathered canyons.

One of the journey’s highlights came in the form of new friendships. In Cafayate, Stephen met an 80 year old biker from San Juan, sharing stories and coffee, as well as connecting with other motorcyclists from around the world. These chance encounters, bound by a shared love for the road, have added a special warmth to his adventure.

Before leaving Argentina, Stephen also gave his bike some much-needed care with a full service to keep it in top shape for the miles ahead. Crossing into Caldera, Chile, he was struck by the hospitality of the tight-knit local community, who welcomed him like one of their own, another reminder of the kindness that often waits just beyond the next bend.

Stephen now continues his journey in Bolivia, with more mission projects, local traditions, and wild landscapes to uncover as he makes his way further across South and Central America.
